While a family history of cancer is a risk factor, cancer can still happen if it doesn\u2019t run in your family. Most women who get breast cancer don\u2019t have a family history of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>As a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/health-insurance\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">health care<\/a> worker, Estes\u2019 medical instincts pushed her to get what felt like a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/breast-infection\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">mastitis<\/a> breast pain, clogged milk ducts that may happen when you <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/parenting\/baby\/nursing-basics\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">breastfeed<\/a>, checked out. \u201cI knew that I didn&#8217;t have mastitis because I was not [breast]feeding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In September 2018, Estes was diagnosed with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/breast-cancer\/ductal-carcinoma-invasive-in-situ\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">invasive ductal carcinoma<\/a>, a common type of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/breast-cancer\/understanding-breast-cancer-basics\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">breast cancer<\/a> that starts in the milk ducts. It makes up about 80% of all breast cancer cases.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>A life-changing diagnosis like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/picture-of-the-breasts\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">breast<\/a> cancer can dig up a lot of emotions. It\u2019s not uncommon to have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/depression\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">depression<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/anxiety-panic\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">anxiety<\/a>, uncertainty, fear, loneliness, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/beauty\/love_your_body_inside_and_out\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">body image<\/a> issues, among others. In fact, about 1 in 4 people with any type of cancer may have major or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/depression\/major-depression\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">clinical depression<\/a> and benefit from its treatment. One day you\u2019re just going about your life and the next minute, you\u2019re scrambling to get tests and scans as you try to make sense of complex medical information and your fast-changing reality.<\/p>\n<div id=\"em-pullquote-2\" class=\"middle\" ref=\"em-pullquote-2\">\n<aside data-e2e=\"ia-pull-quote\" id=\"ia-pull-quote\" align=\"middle\" class=\"ia-module-container ia-pull-quote middle\">\n<blockquote class=\"pq-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"pq-title\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFocus on one step of the plan at a time and remain flexible because sometimes the plan changes.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<small class=\"pq-description\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tKathleen Ashton, clinical health psychologist<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/small>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/aside><\/div>\n<p>After getting the diagnosis, some women may feel \u201csignificant distress,\u201d says Kathleen Ashton, a clinical health <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/mental-health\/guide-to-psychiatry-and-counseling\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">psychologist<\/a> in the Breast Center, Digestive Disease, and Surgery Institute at Cleveland Clinic. \u201cThey may not know what the next steps are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word \u201ccancer\u201d itself may be a source of worry for many women, Ashton says. The fears can include worries about treatment costs, anxiety, and uncertainty about how it will impact your life or even your mortality, how the cancer may change your physical body, and how it may affect your loved one\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div data-page=\"2\">\n<section>\n<p>After the diagnosis, you\u2019ll meet with your doctor to go over a treatment plan based on the type and degree of cancer you have. Ashton says it\u2019s easy to feel \u201cvery overwhelmed,\u201d as there are multiple steps and lots of information to take in. It\u2019s a good idea to take a support person along to help you through it and to take notes on what\u2019s said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really recommend that patients focus on one step of the plan at a time and to remain flexible because sometimes the plan changes as you get more information at each step,\u201d Ashton says. This may help you feel less anxious.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/breast-cancer-treatment\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">Breast cancer treatments<\/a> like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/cancer\/chemotherapy-what-to-expect\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">chemotherapy<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/cancer\/what-to-expect-from-radiation-therapy\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">radiation<\/a>, or surgery may bring about a lot of physical changes. Depending on the type of treatment you have, surgical breast tissue removal or reconstruction may result in scars. You may lose <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/skin-problems-and-treatments\/hair-loss\/understanding-hair-loss-basics\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">hair<\/a> through chemotherapy. Some people with breast cancer may also have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/ss\/slideshow-weight-gain-shockers\" data-crosslink-type=\"slideshows\">weight gain<\/a> and go through early menopause. These physical changes may bring about issues with self-image and confidence.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>For Estes, losing her <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/beauty\/rm-quiz-hair-care\" data-crosslink-type=\"tools\">hair<\/a> was a big point of worry. \u201cIn the African American culture &#8230; it&#8217;s really our crown, our strength. It&#8217;s who we are,\u201d Estes says. \u201cI had a lot of pride and joy in my hair.\u201d Once Estes started to lose hair, she says she decided to embrace it. \u201cI just went and got it shaved completely off.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"em-image-3\" class=\"right\" ref=\"em-image-3\">\n<aside data-e2e=\"ia-image\" align=\"right\" class=\"ia-module-container ia-image right\" data-metric-module=\"ia-img-soc\">\n<figure>\n<div class=\"main\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.wbmdstatic.com\/vim\/live\/webmd\/consumer_assets\/site_images\/article_thumbnails\/features\/_2021\/01_2021\/emotional_side_of_breast_cancer_features\/280x340_emotional_side_of_breast_cancer_feature_snehal_ponde.jpg?resize=300:*\" alt=\"Snehal Ponde\" style=\"height:auto;\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><figcaption>\n<p class=\"module_description\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSnehal Ponde\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/aside><\/div>\n<p>Snehal Ponde also had strong feelings about her hair. \u201cThe only thing I thought of was, \u2018I don&#8217;t want to lose my hair.\u2019 It&#8217;s like your hair, your breast &#8212; it&#8217;s a reflection of who we are as women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ponde, a 37-year-old Indian expat living in Singapore, gave birth to her son in April 2020. Three months later, like Estes, she felt a lump that turned out to be stage IV cancer.<\/p>\n<p>During chemo, she chose to try a cooling cap to reduce <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/skin-problems-and-treatments\/hair-loss\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">hair loss<\/a>. The cap, which is worn before, during, and after each treatment, is designed to circulate a cooling liquid around your head. The cold temperature may stop the chemo from damaging your hair follicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, I almost have 60%-70% of my hair,\u201d Ponde says. The research on cooling caps has been mixed, with better results from the newer types of these caps, some of which have FDA clearance. There are some theoretical questions about whether the cold temperatures might let some cancer cells stick around in the scalp, but no signals of safety problems in studies so far. If you\u2019re thinking about adding a cooling cap, ask your doctor for their take on them and what to look for. And check on whether your <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/health-insurance\/video\/what-is-the-aca\" data-crosslink-type=\"video\">insurance<\/a> covers the cap\u2019s cost.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div data-page=\"3\">\n<section>\n<p>For Shayla Wishloff, the sudden sense of uncertainty was jarring. \u201cI thought I had such control of my life. I&#8217;m always the girl who had the year planner. I planned my vacations 6 months down the road. I had a 5-year plan, and I was doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"em-image-4\" class=\"left\" ref=\"em-image-4\">\n<aside data-e2e=\"ia-image\" align=\"left\" class=\"ia-module-container ia-image left\" data-metric-module=\"ia-img-soc\">\n<figure>\n<div class=\"main\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.wbmdstatic.com\/vim\/live\/webmd\/consumer_assets\/site_images\/article_thumbnails\/features\/_2021\/01_2021\/emotional_side_of_breast_cancer_features\/280x340_emotional_side_of_breast_cancer_feature_shayla_wishloff.jpg?resize=300:*\" alt=\"Shayla Wishloff\" style=\"height:auto;\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><figcaption>\n<p class=\"module_description\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tShayla Wishloff\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/aside><\/div>\n<p>Wishloff, now 25, was 24 when she got her <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/breast-cancer\/breast-cancer-detection\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">breast cancer diagnosis<\/a>. She had just finished nursing school in Alberta, Canada and was talking about buying a home, getting married, and having kids. One day, while applying lotion after a shower, she felt a lump in her breast. \u201cHaving my nursing background, I was like, \u2018Well, that&#8217;s not good.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doctors assured her that it\u2019s very rare for someone in their 20s to get breast cancer. Studies show that only 5% of all breast cancers are found in people younger than 40; breast cancer is most often diagnosed in women age 50 and older. But Wishloff\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/cancer\/what-is-a-biopsy\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">biopsy<\/a> led to a diagnosis of an aggressive form of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/breast-cancer\/stage_2_breast_cancer_treatment_options\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">stage II breast cancer<\/a>. \u201cI thought I could beat it,\u201d Wishloff says.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section><pagebreak\/>\n<p>After 6 months of chemotherapy that she says did not really work, Wishloff got surgery to remove both breasts &#8212; a double <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/breast-cancer\/mastectomy\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">mastectomy<\/a> &#8212; followed by reconstructive surgery. Wishloff also got radiation treatments to try to kill any remaining cancer cells. She recalls being told there was \u201cno evidence of disease\u201d afterward.<\/p>\n<p>But a few months later, bad news came. Wishloff says that a follow-up <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/what-is-a-ct-scan\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">CT scan<\/a> showed multiple tumors in her <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/lung\/healthy-lungs-smokers-lungs\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">lungs<\/a> and breastbone. It was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/breast-cancer\/stage-4-treatment-options\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">stage IV breast cancer<\/a>, which can be treated but not cured. Wishloff says that in October 2020, her doctors estimated she had approximately a year to live. \u201cIt&#8217;s just such a shock. Today, I&#8217;m happy. Today, I can live a good day.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div data-page=\"4\">\n<section>\n<p>Going through breast cancer and its treatment may exhaust you physically and emotionally. Having family and friends who act as a support system can be a comfort.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Estes feels fortunate to have close family members nearby. But it\u2019s her best friends who really help lift her up when she needs it. They call themselves the Ta Group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s five of my best friends,\u201d she says. \u201cWe would just get together and pray. I&#8217;ll go into my prayer closet &#8212; I call it my war room. You can find support groups on social media sites like Facebook and you can join local organizations.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section><pagebreak\/>\n<p>You can also speak to a social worker or your counselor for more resources. When you\u2019re seeking a community, Ashton notes that hearing people\u2019s stories or reading too many negative posts online may make you more anxious. Her advice: Notice what\u2019s helping you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen with breast cancer come into their diagnosis with many strengths, and it&#8217;s important to use those strengths along the way to help you in your journey,\u201d Ashton says.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<p>Breast cancer diagnosis and treatments demand a lot from you and your body. You owe it to yourself to take time &#8212; even a few moments every now and then &#8212; to unwind and take care of yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few things you can do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/balance\/the-health-benefits-of-yoga\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\"><strong>Yoga<\/strong><\/a><strong> and <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/balance\/meditation-natural-remedy-for-insomnia\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\"><strong>meditation<\/strong><\/a>. These mindfulness practices can help to lower your <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/women\/why-so-tired-10-causes-fatigue\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">fatigue<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/balance\/stress-management\/default.htm\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">stress<\/a>. To get started, close your <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/eye-health\/picture-of-the-eyes\" data-crosslink-type=\"article\">eyes<\/a> and think of a happy image in your mind. You can also think of an activity you like and let your mind linger.
