Our dreams are unlikely to be realised, what with the establishment of the \u2018digital nomad visa\u2019, so we must accept the reality of the world as it plays out in front of us. Also, as much as we\u2019d like to use different terms throughout this article, search engine optimisation is a thing. With all that in mind, let\u2019s look at the best global cities for digital nomads! Digital nomads!<\/p>\n
As you can probably tell from our broad range of guides<\/a> covering European countries, we are fond of the old continent. There are some seriously splendid cities there, and many are of the eminently liveable variety. But the world is also quite a large place, and, if you\u2019re to believe maps and geographers, most of it is actually not<\/em> in Europe. So we\u2019ve gone ahead and cast our net as widely as possible, and come up with a diverse selection of cities from every continent sans that freezing cold one down south, which shouldn\u2019t even be considered a continent if you ask us. If Pluto can be stripped of its planetary status, surely something can be done about Antarctica, right? But that\u2019s an argument for another day, so we digress.<\/p>\n If you are a freelancer working in the digital world looking for a new place to call home, look no further than the 12 places covered in detail below. The world\u2019s arms are open to digital nomads of all shapes and sizes, whether you are a spinach-addicted sailor man, a revolutionary 1980s musician, a grumpy Portuguese writer or just a human trying to make a living writing code.\u00a0<\/p>\n We have long assumed that the \u201cinternet\u201d is some magical place up in the clouds, so it makes sense that the Mile High City ticks a lot of boxes for digital nomads. The myriad surrounding mountain peaks should provide plenty of inspiration, while the city itself has one of the best downtowns in the country, with excellent cafes, restaurants and all the bars you could hope for. The airport is busy as heck, with brilliant connections seemingly everywhere, and the general Denver vibe is one of \u201cwork hard, play hard.\u201d The United States doesn\u2019t have a digital nomad visa available at the time of writing, but don\u2019t let that stop you from reaching for the American Dream.<\/p>\n Despite primarily covering Europe, the capital of Malaysia has held a special place in hearts and minds of In Your Pocket going back at least a decade \u2013 a fact which was reinforced when our editor-in-chief got \u2018stuck\u2019 living there for a year and a half during the pandemic, making it the de facto editorial headquarters of operations at the time. And what a place to live it is! While it doesn\u2019t have the major tourist attractions or notoriety of some of its southeast Asian cohorts, it boasts unparalleled food scene, great public transportation, burgeoning arts scene and a truly fascinating mix of cultures and history. On the downside is the oppressively humid tropical climate, but it\u2019s also one of the rare modern cities where wearing flip flops downtown won\u2019t draw glares or even quizzical looks from locals. <\/p>\n Sticking with low-income requirements, Albania<\/a> offers a type D visa for digital workers<\/a> that defeats all on the income part. To apply, you must prove that you earn enough to survive. What does that mean exactly? Nobody is entirely sure, but hey, welcome to Albania. The days of it being a hidden gem are long gone, but it remains a gorgeous spot to spend your time, whether in its historically curious cities or the glistening splendour of the coast. Tirana<\/a> wins here, primarily because of the range of things on offer, its brilliant cafe scene, and whatever the heck that damn pyramid is.<\/p>\n We mean this in the most positive way, but there is something brilliantly generic about travel in Morocco. For many in the Western world, wandering the souks and streets of Marrakech is precisely what they imagine travel to be, a dream mainly influenced by turn-of-the-century writing and somewhat tired stereotypes about \u201cothers.\u201d Forget all that nonsense, however, because Morocco is a fantastic place to set up shop. Marrakech gets the headlines, but Tangier isn\u2019t far behind and arguably makes more sense for digital nomads with its co-working spaces and cafe scene. It doesn\u2019t have a digital nomad visa yet, but there are a variety of permits available for those willing to test their patience with bureaucracy.<\/p>\n We tried desperately to choose a different German city for this exercise, but sometimes a hedgehog is a hedgehog. Berlin<\/a> is a digital nomad paradise because of course it is. Europe\u2019s most multicultural city is practically set up to embrace different languages, cultures, cuisines and traditions, and it is all the better for it. It is easy to imagine David Bowie sauntering<\/a> in after receiving his freelancer visa, successfully proving self-sufficiency to the bureaucracy and settling into his pre-arranged address in the city before changing his work schedule to allow for maximum exploration and entertainment. At this point, you know what you are getting from life in Germany<\/a>; it lives up to all the hype.<\/p>\n If there is ever a list of the best anything around the world, it should be law for something Uruguayan to make the final cut. Digital nomad living is no different, and we were overjoyed when the country\u2019s digital nomad visa went live in June 2023. As the country\u2019s capital and centre of focus, Montevideo makes the most sense as a digital nomad base, with a vibrant cafe scene and a long history of intermingling cultures and ethnicities. Also, the sea, you know? The digital nomad visa is remarkably cheap at \u20ac10, although the six-month visa can only be extended on one occasion.<\/p>\n Bucharest<\/a> is the excellent internet capital of Europe, home to the EU\u2019s fastest fixed broadband speeds. Even if you discount the fascinating history and sweeping countryside of the country, the consistency of the connection alone makes it a haven for digital nomads. The government has clocked on to this, and the required monthly income amount has risen at an alarming rate, currently at \u20ac3,300. Still, it is worth it if you don\u2019t have to bumble through video calls, right? The digital nomad visa<\/a> is valid for one year, which can be extended for 12 months.<\/p>\n If, like us, you are one or two crises away from sacking it all off and going to live in paradise, Saint Lucia is arguably the best bet for digital types. The Caribbean island has introduced its Saint Lucia Live It visa, ostensibly a 12-month multiple-entry visa that allows folks to live and work on the island. The visa costs around \u20ac75, you don\u2019t need to provide proof of income, and living costs are low, at least by Caribbean standards. Also, did we mention that it is an island in the Caribbean? That sort of tells you all you need to know, surely?<\/p>\n Namibia was the first mainland African country to implement a digital nomad visa system, and the requirements were refreshingly low. Those hoping to acquire the visa must have a monthly income of around \u20ac2,000, and the visa itself costs only \u20ac60. Sure, it is only valid for six months, but that should give you enough time to make future plans. Windhoek is the obvious place to base yourself, being the capital and all that jazz, as well as having low living costs, a bustling city feel and all the cafes you\u2019ll ever need. The internet isn\u2019t the best, but remember what happened when that tortoise and the arrogant hare had a race? Exactly.\u00a0<\/p>\n It could be the comforts of familiarity, but the merest mention of anything digital nomad conjures up images of days spent in Dalmatian cafes, fighting to remind ourselves that wine doesn\u2019t help to-do lists get done. Croatia<\/a> has long been ahead of the game on all things digital nomad, with a heavily pushed digital nomad visa<\/a> being set up early on. The visa is valid for one year but can be extended after six months, and a monthly income of \u20ac2,000 is a must. Tick those boxes, and a gorgeous country awaits, no matter where you set up shop. Zadar<\/a>, Zagreb<\/a>, \u0160ibenik<\/a> and Rijeka<\/a> are all fantastic options, but Split<\/a> is Split. After all, you can smash out articles while sipping coffee in the house where Marko Maruli\u0107 was born. If that isn\u2019t digital nomad living, what is?<\/p>\n Despite our best attempts to perpetuate the stereotype, digital nomads aren\u2019t always vagabonds wandering from cafe to cafe, searching for black coffee and a charging outlet. Some digital nomads make good money and find themselves living in Abu Dhabi, making the most of streamlined working conditions, modern amenities and a relatively low-income threshold when compared to Dubai, which seems to be struggling with an Instagram infestation at the time of writing. While Abu Dhabi might be associated with skyscrapers and sophistication, history goes way, way back here, and there is plenty of culture to sink your teeth into. The internet is lightning-quick, which always helps.<\/p>\n Lisbon<\/a> is a must on all positive European lists ever, and this is no different. In fact, much of our procrastination is spent chastising ourselves for not upping sticks and heading there already for a life of vibrant azulejos and iconic Portuguese cobblestones. Lisbon is a dream, a city of gorgeous weather, delicious food, relatively low costs and the added bonus of all things Fernando Pessoa. Okay, The Book of Disquiet<\/em> is relentless, but all is worthwhile if the soul is not small. Portugal<\/a> has two options on the visa front; the D7 visa lasts from one to five years and only requires a monthly income of \u20ac600 (it can be a little heavy on the bureaucratic side of things), while the newly-introduced digital nomad visa requires a monthly income of \u20ac3,000 (four times the minimum wage) and is valid for one year.<\/p>\n We lived in Prague<\/a> for a couple of years and tend to be bullish about the city, although that says more about us than the Czech capital. Praha is as gorgeous as its reputation suggests, and the districts outside the city centre are as fascinating as they are varied. Czechia\u2019s<\/a> freelancer visa is a bit frustrating to organise, and recent developments have seen the country focus its attention on workers in its rapidly depleting IT sector. If you enjoy broken conversations with bureaucrats who have no desire to help you, Prague is the city for you. Wait, all of this sounds decidedly negative, but there is a catch. The magic of Prague makes all the frustration worth it, and there isn\u2019t a better after-work beer on the planet. Miss you, Hells Bells Rockin\u2019 Pub. If you are an IT whizz and are looking to apply, you need three years of work experience (or a degree in a STEM subject) and an income of at least 1.5 the average Czech income. That means at least \u20ac2,500, or 1,456 beers in Hells Bells.<\/p>\n Budapest<\/a>, you are cruel. You frustrate us in so many ways, but then you go and serve up a digital nomad platter that is impossible to resist. A one-year white card<\/a> with a monthly income requirement of only \u20ac2,000? To live in one of Europe\u2019s most beautiful cities, a confident city with the continent\u2019s most thrilling nightlife<\/a>? Danube cruises? The chance to smugly remind everyone back home that it is actually two cities? Okay, Budapest (sorry, Buda and Pest), you win. Digital nomads love this place.<\/p>\n Tallinn<\/a> is the excellent internet capital of Europe. Yes, we already gave that crown to Bucharest<\/a>, but we mean it differently here. Estonia was the world\u2019s first digitised country and a place where Wi-Fi access is essentially a human right, and embracing all the internet offers has become second nature. Estonia<\/a> was ahead of the curve on the e-residency front and was also the first European country to put together a digital nomad visa<\/a>. You need to earn at least \u20ac3,500 monthly, but come on now, get your head in the game. Tallinn is romantic as heck, more romantic than heck, and you should probably live there already.<\/p>\n Latvia\u2019s<\/a> digital nomad visa isn\u2019t as accessible as others precisely because it requires an employment contract for a business registered in an OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) country, but it gets a spot on this list because it is absolutely marvellous. Small but perfectly formed, Latvia is ideally set-up for exploration, whether strolling around its small towns or lazing on its coast, with Riga<\/a> thriving as a modern European capital. We have never had a bad time in Riga, including that one time we saw a dude hold a gun to his own head on a tram, but we don\u2019t like talking about that. To get the digital nomad visa<\/a>, applicants must earn 2.5 times the Latvian average salary, so bring in around \u20ac2,300 every month, and you are hot to trot.<\/p>\n As Popeye was the original digital nomad, it is only fitting that Malta<\/a> gets top billing. None of that is true, but we\u2019ll take any excuse we can to talk about the spinach-guzzling loon, especially if it means imagining him trying to eke out a living as a software developer in the cafes of Europe. Malta flies under the radar in all things Europe, and that is a crime. The small island nation serves up more than 300 days of sunshine every year, a perpetually sunny place with fast internet and a keen eye on the freelance market, with the one-year Nomad Residence Permit <\/a>ticking most of the boxes that a digital nomad visa needs to. Earnings must be at least \u00a32,500 a month, and applicants must also have a rental contract. You might be wondering about the Popeye stuff<\/a>, and we don\u2019t blame you. Malta has an entire village dedicated to the belligerent sailor man, ostensibly left over from filming the 1980 live-action movie.\u00a0<\/p>\nDenver, United States<\/strong><\/h2>\n
